Chapter Six

Their place was already packed. It was Super Bowl Sunday, and luckily they were not on shift. Last year they had to watch bits and pieces in between calls to root for the team of choice. You live in Boston, you root for the Patriots, it was as simple as that, or else get booted out of the city or something. It may not be a technical rule, but if you ask anyone she knew they’d agree the Patriots should be the one. The big screen TV was blaring with highlights from previous games, beer was being passed around, and Sierra made every possible game day food she could think of.

She even tried a new beer bratwurst with cheese sauce. Her roommate helped taste test two and deemed them worthy for a king. One thing was missing and that was Dawson. An emergency had come up at one of his job sites, so he was running late. They’d be watching from her sitting area upstairs. It gave them the luxury of yelling downstairs but they would still have a little alone time together in the midst of the party. She recalled her last day off and their conversation as they spent the day together.

“So your idea is kind of like box seats,” Dawson had said when she mentioned it. “Next year, let’s go to where the game is being held and watch it live.”

Hearing his words, Sierra twined her arms around his neck. “Do you think this time next year we’ll still be together and having a first anniversary thing?”

Dawson kissed her and squeezed her tight. “You bet, baby. Now get dressed. I’m going to show you what I do for a living.”

She was actually looking forward to seeing his work site and his comment about them being together pleased her. Sierra didn’t know a sense of permanence in a relationship could make her feel so warm and fuzzy inside. Maybe she’d be taking him to Florida to meet her parents, or heck, living together getting ready to be married. The thought caused her heart to skip a beat and her eyes to widen. Holy shit, she was thinking marriage and a future together!

“You okay?” Dawson asked, glancing at her as he drove. “You gasped a little.”

“I’m fine, I mean more than fine.” She reached over and squeezed his hand. “I’m perfect.”\

Dawson smiled and squeezed her hand. “Me too.”

There was a hard hat involved and she loved wearing it, even the tool belt as he showed her around. Mike had taken the extra work that Dawson offered and she could see why. Dawson let her use a sledgehammer to break through a wall and it was downright cathartic. One of his crew came by as she swung the heavy hammer and stopped to look.

“That’s pretty impressive for a girl,” the man commented.

“She’s not just any girl. Sierra, meet my foreman on this site, Shep Haskins,”

Dawson said. “Shep, this is my girl, Sierra, and she probably can swing an ax and take your head off with the swing.
